The Moldovan leu (MDL, plural lei) is Moldova's money. It shares its name, meaning "lion", with the Romanian leu next door, but they are separate currencies. Moldova is small and leans heavily on money sent home by workers abroad, so the leu is a thinly traded exotic that is sensitive to regional politics.
