Net International Investment Position

a.k.a. NIIP

A country's foreign assets minus what it owes to foreigners: its net worth against the rest of the world.
In plain English

A country's foreign assets minus what it owes to foreigners: its net worth against the rest of the world.

The net international investment position (NIIP) is a nation's balance sheet with the world. On one side: everything its people, companies and government own abroad. On the other: everything foreigners own inside the country. Subtract one from the other.

A big positive number, like Japan's, means the country is a global lender, and its money tends to come rushing home in a crisis (one reason the yen can rise when markets panic). A big negative number, like the US's, means the world holds a large claim on the country, which works only as long as foreigners keep wanting its assets.
