Pipette
a.k.a. Fractional pip, Point
A tenth of a pip: the extra fifth decimal (or third, on yen pairs) that many brokers now show in their prices.
Many brokers quote prices one digit finer than a pip. EUR/USD might show as 1.08503 instead of 1.0850. That last digit is a pipette, or a fractional pip, worth one tenth of a pip.
Pipettes let prices move in smaller steps and let brokers offer tighter spreads, like 0.8 of a pip instead of a whole one. Just keep your eye on the right digit when counting.
Pips vs pipettes
- EUR/USD moves from 1.08500 to 1.08537.
- That is 0.00037: 37 pipettes.
- 37 pipettes ÷ 10 = 3.7 pips.
Bottom line: A move that looks like "37" on the last digits is really 3.7 pips.
Reading the fifth decimal as a pip and thinking you moved ten times further than you did.
