In plain English
A blockchain network designed to link many specialised blockchains so they can share security and pass messages.
Polkadot was founded by Gavin Wood, an Ethereum co-founder, and launched in 2020. Instead of one chain doing everything, it has a central "relay chain" that provides security, with many connected chains plugged into it, each built for its own purpose.
The idea is a network of blockchains that can talk to each other rather than living as isolated islands. Its coin, DOT, is used for staking under proof of stake and for voting on how the network changes.
