Poloniex launched in 2014 and became one of the busiest exchanges for trading altcoins in the mid-2010s. It was bought by the payments firm Circle in 2019 and later sold on to a new group of investors, shifting its focus to customers outside the US.
It has been hacked more than once, including a large theft in 2023. Its story is a common one in crypto: big in one boom, overtaken in the next, and a reminder of the risks of keeping coins on any single exchange.
