Special Drawing Rights

a.k.a. SDR, XDR

An international reserve asset created by the IMF, valued against a basket of five major currencies.
In plain English

An international reserve asset created by the IMF, valued against a basket of five major currencies.

Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) are a kind of super-currency created by the IMF. They are not cash anyone spends in a shop; they are a reserve asset that member countries hold and can swap for real currencies when they need them. Their currency code is XDR.

Their value is based on a basket of the US dollar, euro, Chinese yuan, Japanese yen and British pound. China's yuan was added in 2016, a symbolic step for its global role. The IMF issues SDRs in large batches during crises, as it did in 2021.
