Currency Code
a.k.a. ISO 4217
The three-letter code for each currency, like USD, EUR or JPY, defined by the international standard ISO 4217.
In plain English
The three-letter code for each currency, like USD, EUR or JPY, defined by the international standard ISO 4217.
Every currency gets a currency code under the standard ISO 4217. Usually the first two letters are the country's code and the third is the currency's initial: US + D = USD, JP + Y = JPY, GB + P = GBP. The euro breaks the rule with EUR.
Codes starting with X are special: XAU is gold, XAG silver, XDR the IMF's Special Drawing Right. That is why gold is quoted as XAU/USD.
