Standard lot
100,000 units of the base currency. On EUR/USD, one pip on a standard lot is worth about $10.
A standard lot is 100,000 units of the base currency, shown as 1.00 lot on most platforms. Trading one standard lot of EUR/USD means controlling about 108,500 dollars of currency at a rate of 1.0850.
Nobody needs that much cash on hand thanks to leverage, which is exactly why standard lots are dangerous for small accounts. A 100-pip move, which can happen in a single wild day, is about $1,000.
Pip value on a standard lot
- Pip size on EUR/USD = 0.0001.
- 0.0001 × 100,000 units = 10 dollars a pip.
- A 40-pip move: 40 × $10 = $400.
Bottom line: One standard lot turns every pip into roughly $10.
Starting with standard lots on a small account. One bad day can wipe out weeks of savings.
