In plain English

A monthly US survey of how consumers feel about their finances and the economy, including their inflation expectations.

The University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment index surveys Americans about their personal finances, business conditions and big purchases. It comes out twice a month: a preliminary reading, then a final one.

Traders care most about the inflation-expectations questions. If people expect prices to keep rising, they may demand higher wages and spend sooner, making inflation self-fulfilling. The Fed watches these numbers closely.
