Zero Confirmation Transaction
a.k.a. Zero-conf, 0-conf
A payment accepted before it has been included in any block, which is fast but can be reversed by a double spend.
A zero confirmation transaction is a payment someone treats as done the moment it's broadcast, before it's in a single block. It's still unconfirmed, sitting in the waiting room.
It's quick, so it's tempting for small purchases like a coffee. But until it's mined, the sender could try to replace it with a conflicting payment that sends the same coins elsewhere, a double spend. Each extra confirmation makes reversal much harder, which is why exchanges wait for several before crediting big deposits.
