Zimbabwean Dollar

a.k.a. ZWD, ZWL

Zimbabwe's former currency, made famous by extreme hyperinflation and its 100-trillion-dollar banknote.
In plain English

Zimbabwe's former currency, made famous by extreme hyperinflation and its 100-trillion-dollar banknote.

The Zimbabwean dollar is the poster child for hyperinflation. In 2008, prices were doubling roughly every day, and the central bank printed a 100-trillion-dollar note that could barely buy a loaf of bread. In 2009 the country abandoned its currency and used US dollars and other foreign money instead.

It later revived a Zimbabwean dollar, which also lost value quickly, and in 2024 introduced a gold-backed currency, the ZiG. Its story is the classic warning of what happens when a government prints money to pay its bills.
