ZEW Indicator of Economic Sentiment
a.k.a. ZEW, ZEW Financial Market Survey, ZEW survey
A monthly German survey of financial analysts' expectations for the economy over the next six months.
The ZEW Indicator of Economic Sentiment comes from the ZEW institute in Mannheim, Germany. Each month, its Financial Market Survey asks a few hundred analysts and investors whether they expect Germany's economy to improve or worsen over the next six months. Optimists minus pessimists gives the headline number.
Germany is the eurozone's biggest economy, and the ZEW is one of the earliest monthly reads on its mood, so it can move the euro. A separate reading covers analysts' view of current conditions.
