Zweig Breadth Thrust
A rare stock-market signal that fires when market breadth swings from very weak to very strong within ten days.
The Zweig Breadth Thrust, devised by investor Martin Zweig, watches the share of stocks rising versus falling on the New York Stock Exchange, smoothed over ten days. If that measure jumps from deeply negative (below about 40%) to strongly positive (above about 61.5%) within ten trading days, the signal fires.
It means buying has gone from scarce to almost universal very quickly, which historically tended to happen near the start of new bull runs. It is rare, and like every signal, past results are no guarantee.
