Bitcoin Pizza Day
a.k.a. Pizza Day
May 22, the anniversary of the 2010 purchase of two pizzas for 10,000 bitcoin, an early real-world use of the coin.
Bitcoin Pizza Day goes back to May 22, 2010, when a programmer named Laszlo Hanyecz offered 10,000 bitcoin on an online forum to anyone who would get him two pizzas. Someone took the deal, ordered the pizzas, and Bitcoin had one of its first real purchases of physical goods. At the time those coins were worth only a few tens of dollars.
Crypto fans now mark the day every year, usually with a wince at what 10,000 BTC became. It is a fun reminder that Bitcoin started as an experiment in actually paying for things, and that nobody, not even early insiders, knew where the price would go.
