Bitstamp launched in 2011 in Slovenia, making it one of the longest-surviving bitcoin exchanges at a time when many rivals vanished in hacks and collapses. It built its name on licences and a fairly conservative list of coins rather than flashy features.
In 2024 the US trading app Robinhood agreed to buy it. Like any centralized exchange, it holds customers' coins for them in a custodial setup, so you are trusting the company with your crypto while it sits there.
