Litecoin was built from Bitcoin's code in 2011 with a few tweaks: blocks arrive about every two and a half minutes instead of ten, and it uses a different mining puzzle. Its total supply is capped at 84 million coins, four times Bitcoin's.
People often call it the silver to Bitcoin's gold. It's a useful reminder that being early doesn't guarantee staying on top.
