MetaTrader 5 (MT5) is the follow-up to MT4. It adds more timeframes, more order types, a built-in economic calendar, a faster strategy tester, and support for exchange-traded markets like stocks and futures. Its robots are written in MQL5, which is not directly compatible with MT4 code.
That incompatibility is why many traders stuck with MT4 for years. Over time, though, more brokers have been nudging new clients onto MT5.
