New Zealand Dollar

a.k.a. NZD, Kiwi, Kiwi dollar

New Zealand's currency, nicknamed the Kiwi, and a classic commodity- and risk-sensitive currency.
In plain English

New Zealand's currency, nicknamed the Kiwi, and a classic commodity- and risk-sensitive currency.

The New Zealand dollar (NZD) is nicknamed the Kiwi after the country's flightless bird printed on its one-dollar coin. NZD/USD is one of the major traded pairs. New Zealand is a big exporter of dairy and other farm goods, so the Kiwi likes it when global demand, and China's appetite in particular, is strong.

It also tends to behave as a risk-on currency: when investors feel brave it gets bid up, and when they get scared it slumps. New Zealand's central bank, the RBNZ, was the first in the world to adopt a formal inflation target, back in 1990.
