Treasury General Account
a.k.a. TGA
The US government's main bank account, held at the Federal Reserve.
In plain English
The US government's main bank account, held at the Federal Reserve.
The Treasury General Account (TGA) is the US government's checking account at the Fed. Taxes and borrowed money flow in; government spending flows out.
It matters to markets because of plumbing. When the TGA fills up, for example after a big round of bond sales, money is pulled out of the banking system and reserves shrink. When it is drawn down, money flows back in. Big swings, especially around debt-ceiling fights, can tighten or loosen liquidity in ways traders notice.
