U.S. Department of the Treasury
a.k.a. US Treasury, Treasury Department, The Treasury
The US government department that manages federal finances, borrows by issuing Treasuries, and speaks for the government on the dollar.
The U.S. Department of the Treasury runs the federal government's money. It collects taxes through the IRS, prints notes and mints coins, pays the government's bills and borrows by selling Treasury bills, notes and bonds. It is headed by the Treasury Secretary.
For forex traders, it matters in two ways. Its borrowing plans, set out in the quarterly refunding announcement, move bond yields. And it, not the Fed, has authority over US currency policy, including its regular reports on which countries might be manipulating their currencies.
