In plain English

A weekly poll asking US individual investors whether they expect stocks to rise, fall or go nowhere over the next six months.

The AAII Sentiment Survey comes from the American Association of Individual Investors. Every week its members vote: bullish, bearish or neutral. The result is a quick thermometer of how ordinary investors feel.

Many traders read it backwards. When almost everyone is shouting 'up', there may be few buyers left to push prices higher; when the crowd is curled up in fear, the selling may be nearly done. That is called a contrarian signal, and it is a mood gauge, not a timing tool.
