Bittrex was a Seattle-based crypto exchange started in 2014. It became popular in the 2017 boom for listing hundreds of small altcoins that bigger exchanges wouldn't touch.
In 2023, under pressure from US regulators who said it had operated as an unregistered exchange, Bittrex filed for bankruptcy and wound down its US business, and its international arm closed later that year. Customers had to race to withdraw. It is one more reminder that coins left on an exchange are only as safe as the exchange itself.
