Blockchain

a.k.a. Chain

A notebook copied onto thousands of desks around the world. Rip a page out of yours and every other copy calls you a liar.
In plain English

A shared digital ledger, copied across many computers, where records are grouped into blocks and chained so they can't be quietly changed.

A blockchain is a record book that lots of strangers keep at the same time. Transactions are bundled into blocks, and each block is locked to the one before it with a digital fingerprint, forming a chain back to the very first, the genesis block.

No bank sits in the middle. Instead, thousands of computers called nodes each hold a copy and check every new block against the rules. A consensus system decides who gets to add the next page. To fake a past entry you'd have to redo every block since and overpower the honest majority, which on a big network is wildly expensive. That's what people mean by immutability.

Blockchains are the engine under Bitcoin, Ethereum, DeFi and NFTs. Most are public, so anyone can read every transaction ever made.

Don’t be that stickman

Thinking 'on the blockchain' means 'true'. The chain proves a record wasn't changed, not that what went into it was honest.
