In plain English

A computer that runs a blockchain's software, keeps a copy of its data and passes transactions along to others.

A node is one computer taking part in a blockchain network. It talks to other nodes, shares new transactions and blocks, and keeps its own copy of the ledger.

There are several kinds. A full node checks every rule for itself. Light nodes keep less data and lean on full nodes. Some nodes also do the work of adding blocks, as miners or validators. The more independent nodes there are, the harder the network is to shut down or capture.
