Distributed Ledger Technology

a.k.a. DLT, Distributed ledger

A record-keeping system where many computers each hold and update a shared copy of the same ledger.
In plain English

A record-keeping system where many computers each hold and update a shared copy of the same ledger.

Distributed ledger technology (DLT) is the big family that blockchains belong to. A ledger is a record of who owns what. "Distributed" means there isn't one master copy in one office; many participants hold copies and keep them in sync.

A blockchain is one way to do it, chaining records into blocks. Other designs skip the chain. Banks and companies often say "DLT" when they want the shared-records benefits without the wild-west associations of crypto, usually on a private, permission-only network.
