Dogecoin
a.k.a. DOGE
A cryptocurrency started in 2013 as a joke based on the Shiba Inu 'doge' meme, which became one of the best-known coins.
Dogecoin (DOGE) was launched in December 2013 by two software engineers poking fun at the coin craze, with a Shiba Inu dog from a popular meme as its mascot. The joke caught on. A friendly online community used it for tipping and charity stunts, and in later booms it surged on social media hype, often helped by posts from Elon Musk.
Unlike Bitcoin, Dogecoin has no hard cap: new coins are created every year, forever. It's the original "meme coin", and it shows how much crypto prices can be driven by attention rather than technology. Its many imitators, like Shiba Inu, mostly haven't lasted as long.
Buying a meme coin because a celebrity posted about it. By the time you see the post, the people who move first have already moved.
