Minor pairs
a.k.a. Crosses, Cross pairs
The side streets: still busy, still well lit, but the toll is a little higher.
In plain English
Currency pairs between major currencies that leave out the US dollar, such as EUR/GBP or AUD/JPY.
Minor pairs, also called crosses, match up big currencies without the US dollar. Think EUR/GBP, EUR/JPY, GBP/JPY or AUD/NZD.
They trade plenty, just less than the majors. Expect slightly wider spreads and sometimes sharper moves. Some, like GBP/JPY, have a reputation for bucking like a mechanical bull.
Don’t be that stickman
Jumping on a cross because it moves a lot, without noticing that bigger moves also mean bigger losses per position.
