Non-Custodial Wallet

a.k.a. Self-custody wallet, Self-custody, Noncustodial wallet

Your keys, your coins, your problem.
In plain English

A wallet where you alone hold the private keys, so nobody else can freeze or move your coins, and nobody can rescue them either.

A non-custodial wallet puts you in charge. You hold the private keys, usually backed up as a seed phrase, and no company stands between you and your coins. Phone apps, browser extensions and hardware wallets can all be non-custodial.

Nobody can freeze your funds, and if an exchange collapses, your coins aren't stuck inside it. But there's no "forgot password" button. Lose the seed phrase, or let a scammer see it, and the coins are gone for good. Self-custody swaps counterparty risk for personal responsibility. Compare custodial wallet.

Don’t be that stickman

Setting up a self-custody wallet and skipping the seed-phrase backup because you'll 'do it later'.
