Hardware Wallet

A safe the size of a USB stick. Your keys never leave it.
In plain English

A small physical device that stores your private keys offline and signs transactions without exposing them.

A hardware wallet is a gadget, often the size of a USB stick, built for one job: guarding your private keys. The keys are created and kept inside the device and never leave it. When you send coins, your computer prepares the transaction, the device signs it, and you confirm by pressing buttons on the device itself.

So even if your computer is riddled with malware, it can't grab the keys. That's why hardware wallets are the go-to form of cold storage. Lose the device and you can restore everything from its seed phrase, which is why that phrase needs guarding just as fiercely. Ledger is one well-known maker.

Don’t be that stickman

Buying a hardware wallet second-hand or from a random marketplace seller. A tampered device can come with keys the seller already knows.
