In plain English

A 2017 Bitcoin upgrade that moved signature data out of the main part of each transaction, freeing up block space.

SegWit (Segregated Witness) is an upgrade that went live on Bitcoin in 2017. It separated ("segregated") the signature data, the "witness", from the rest of the transaction data, so more transactions could fit into each block. It also fixed a technical bug that had made building systems like the Lightning Network difficult.

It was introduced as a soft fork, so older software kept working. The long fight over how to scale Bitcoin ended up splitting the community and contributed to the creation of Bitcoin Cash.
