A Ledger wallet is a hardware wallet made by Ledger, a company founded in France in 2014. Its devices keep your private keys on a secure chip and sign transactions offline, and they work with an app for managing many coins.
In 2020, a leak of Ledger's customer database (names, emails, home addresses) let scammers send convincing fake emails and even fake devices. The keys themselves weren't exposed, but it's a sharp lesson: no real company will ever ask for your seed phrase.
Typing your seed phrase into a website or app because an email 'from Ledger' said your device needed an update.
