In plain English

A list of approved addresses or people allowed to do something, like join an early token sale or receive withdrawals.

A whitelist (often now called an allowlist) is a guest list. In crypto it has two common meanings. For new projects, being whitelisted means you're allowed into an early token sale or NFT mint, often at a better price.

On exchanges, an address whitelist is a security feature: you list the addresses your account may withdraw to, and anything else is blocked, often with a waiting period before new ones take effect. If a hacker gets into your account, they can't simply send your coins to themselves.

Don’t be that stickman

Paying a stranger for a 'guaranteed whitelist spot'. That's a common scam with nothing on the other end.
