Hidden websites that can only be reached with special software like Tor and are not indexed by normal search engines.

The dark web is a part of the internet you can't stumble onto with an ordinary browser. Its sites are reached through networks such as Tor, which bounce traffic around to hide who is visiting and who is hosting.

It has legitimate uses, such as helping journalists and people under censorship communicate. It's also home to illegal markets, and crypto, especially in Bitcoin's early years, became the payment method there. That reputation stuck to crypto for years, even though on-chain analysis has since helped investigators trace many dark-web payments.
